Rather than delaying it any longer, I took the last 30 minutes to finally create a quick Government 2.0 Best Practices Wiki for the social media community (working in or with the public sector) to collaboratively work on. I’m planning on filling it out over the next few days with more information, however I figured I’d save myself some work by opening the doors early and letting you start filling it in and/or fine-tuning the layout.
My overall intent here is quite simple. I want to get public servants and government consultants out of their silos and have them start working collaboratively towards a common goal: better governance through the use of social media (i.e. Government 2.0). Every workshop or conference I speak at, I am asked the same first question by most public servants: “Who else is doing this in government?”. I want this wiki to have all the answers and to continually grow as new initiatives arise.
This has been brewing in my mind for a long time now and will eventually lead to much bigger initiatives, including a truly dedicated conference/summit on the topic (ideally sponsored by government departments here in Canada). Stay tuned, planning is already in progress.Â

Great initiative Mike! Looks like you’re off to a fine start with the gov web2.0 wiki. It’s especially apropo for me as a canuck in the (muni) public admin game. It’ll help goad me on to do more. Best of luck with tackling some of your objectives and challenges. Every bit helps.
Nice move on the wiki! I will be paying close attention. To help with the U.S. site, I recommend checking out webcontent.gov, as they list all the current and past blogs, podcasts, rss feeds, etc. for the U.S. Government.
Great thanks! I was just in the process adding items from their website as I received your comment. Very useful.
Thanks Bob! Please feel free to add any municipal examples you may have.
i have a feeling this will fill out in no time. how about splitting the sections into separate pages from the FrontPage?
thanks for taking the initiative! already seen a couple of tweets about the wiki. good on ya!
Already on it Hillary! Thanks.
What a great idea, Mike. And a great resource for all levels of government as we try to leverage the world of ‘Web 2.0’ internally and externally. If you want some entries for the Ontario government, just shout.
Hey Chris, absolutely, please feel free to add them! Let me know if you need help.
Mike – where is the section for ‘unofficial’ undertakings?
Government 2.0 – Best Practices Wiki…
Mike Kujawski of the Centre of Excellence for Public Sector Marketing has set up wiki that aims to list government 2.0 initiatives here in Canada and beyond.
So far the list is pretty much limited to social media initiatives from the Government of Cana…

This is excellent! We’ve been waiting for this! I work at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and we are currently implementing a Wiki, and we also bought IBM Lotus Connections which will give us blogs, dynamic employee profiles, dogears, RSS feeds, etc. We are in a true Web 2.0 era at DFAIT. I’ve been working on the development plans, the communications strategy for a while, and I am on a inter-departmental committee who is looking at identifying best practices and policies for Web 2.0 tools in Government. This might become an important resource for us so thank you for initiating this! I’m sure I will have a lot to add as well from my extensive experience in implementing Web 2.0 tools in the Government for the past year.
Thanks! Can’t wait to see what we’ll get 🙂
To add to list of government organizations using Web.2.0 check out the Government of Ontario’s presense on Second Life. See Youtube –
Thanks Marvin, I added your link to the wiki.

Hey Roc, feel free to add it to the “unofficial” section under “international”
Hi there, I work for the European Commission and came across your site because we are doing a lot of work on developing social media tools and I’m looking for good examples. Seems we’re not doing so badly! We already have several Commissioners, departments and officials blogging (blogs.ec.europa.eu), there’s a list of EU tweeple: http://ec.europa.eu/external_relations/twitter/index_en.htm. We have a channel on YouTube call EUTube. Several departments, offices and individuals are present on Facebook, I can send a list if you’d like.
That would be great! Please send it to firstname.lastname@example.org or better yet, add it to the wiki!
Thanks for this great initiative Mike! Your info was extremely helpful – did a presentation in my grad class about government 2.0.
No problem Amanda! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with re: this topic.
I want to express my appreciation to you just for bailing me out of this crisis. Because of checking through the world wide web and finding notions that were not helpful, I thought my life was gone. Living without the presence of strategies to the difficulties you have fixed all through your website is a serious case, as well as the ones which might have in a negative way damaged my career if I hadn’t discovered the website. Your personal competence and kindness in touching all the pieces was important. I am not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come across such a subject like this. I can also at this moment look ahead to my future. Thanks very much for this specialized and amazing help. I will not hesitate to propose your web page to any individual who should receive support about this problem.
